MITCHELL, S.D. (JimmieAthletics.com) – A Halloween trip to the Corn Palace didn’t go the way the Jimmie basketball teams were hoping. Dakota Wesleyan boasts a pair of top-10 teams and they rolled to double-digit victories.

#8 Dakota Wesleyan 87, #9 Jamestown 69

No. 8 Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) used an 11-0 run over a 2:52 span in the second quarter to turn a one-point lead into a comfortable 11-point advantage as they handed the 9th-ranked Jimmie women’s basketball team an 87-69 defeat Tuesday night.

The Jimmies (2-1) trailed 19-17 after one quarter and trailed by five after an Amber Bray three-pointer at 7:43 of the second. A Paige Emmel (SR/Bismarck, ND) layup tied the game at 24 just under a minute later, but with a 26-25 lead, Dakota Wesleyan (1-0) scored 11 straight to go up by 12 points. Jamestown rallied towards the end of the half and went to the locker room down 41-31.

The Tigers outscored UJ 26-20 in the third quarter and led by as many as 19 after Madison Mathews sank a pair of free throws with 28 seconds left in the quarter. Emmel sank a three with 11 seconds left to cut the DWU lead to 16, 67-51.

UJ was outscored just 20-18 in the final 10 minutes, but shot just 6-of-18 in the quarter, including 2-for-10 from three-point range. DWU was 5-for-8 from the field and sank 9-of-12 free throws down the stretch.

Two big advantages for the Tigers came in points off turnovers (25-17) and points in the paint (36-20).

McKayla Orr (SR/Ypsilanti, ND) led Jamestown with 14 points. Bryn Woodside (SR/Albert Lea, MN) had 12 points, five assists, five rebounds, and four steals while Emmel finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Marina Nowak (JR/Rogers, MN) chipped in with eight points off the bench.

MBB: #10 Dakota Wesleyan 95, Jamestown 80

The Jimmie men’s basketball team outscored Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 47-43 in the second half, but was unable to overcome a 19-point halftime deficit in a 95-80 loss to the 10th-ranked Tigers Tuesday night.

Jamestown (4-1) was down 10-0 just 4:40 into the game, but two buckets by Jon Purintun (JR/Linton, N.D.) and one by Isaiah Dobson(SO/Stillwater, Minn.) cut the DWU lead to 10-6.

The Tigers led by 15 after Trae Vandeberg sank a pair of free throws to make it 33-18 with 8:17 in the half. UJ chipped away at the lead, getting within nine after a Leighton Sampson (SR/Worthington, Minn.) layup made the score 38-29 at the 5:17 mark. An 8-0 Tiger run put the Jimmies down 17, and UJ would get no closer than 15 the rest of the half.

DWU enjoyed its biggest lead of the game, 32 points, after Nygel Drury made one of two free throws to give the Tigers an 82-50 advantage with 9:09 left. However, UJ bounced back with a 15-0 run over the next 3:53 to trail by 17. The Jimmies would get no closer than 12 points the rest of the way, eventually losing by 15.

Isaiah Dobson had a career-high 19 points off the bench to lead UJ. Jon Purintun and Leighton Sampson each finished with 18. Kevin Oberweiser (JR/Drummond, Mont.) had nine points and three assists while Sam Johnson (SR/Mora, Minn.) grabbed seven boards to go with five points.
