VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The discussion to widen sidewalks and to put in new street lights and other standards along Central Avenue in downtown Valley City was addressed again during the city finance and regular city commission meetings on November 7th.

Valley City was selected for Governor Doug Burgum’s Main Street Initiative which focuses on revitalizing downtown business districts in North Dakota.

Under the proposal, 80 percent of the project will be paid for by the state, 20 percent will have to be covered by the city. Valley City officials say there will be no special assessments for business owners in the downtown district with this project. The estimated cost $1.5 million.

Urban Couture owner Chad Couture supports the idea and believes it will benefit downtown businesses in the future.

But, resident Nyle Burchill is opposed to widening sidewalks downtown, he proposed another idea.

Blush Boutique owner Bryan Wolla said this project will have a positive impact for downtown Valley City.

But Valley City Commission Mike Bishop said there’s been a lot of push back about this proposal for downtown.

Streetscape committee members Kay Vinje and George Dutton had a response to Bishops comments and Visitors Committee chairman Bobby Koepplin gave his comment about the proposal.

Streetscape committee member Tim Spellman believes more education is needed to let the public know about the future benefit of this project.

On Friday, November 3rd Streetscape committee chairman Jeff Edwards, Valley City Administrator David Schelkoph, Mayor Dave Carlsrud, KLJ engineer Chad Petersen and City commission Duane Magnuson gave a presentation about the project to Valley City reporters. The following is a portion of that presentation, Mr. Schelkoph give the opening remarks.

The city will hold a public input meeting in December to give more details of the plan and to accept comments from city residents. The date of the meeting will be announced later.
