JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Sportsmen Against Hunger are once again encouraging hunters to consider donating their unwanted game meat to their program to feed those in need.

With the deer opener this Friday, individuals with more than one license are asked to consider donating a deer to the worthy cause. In addition, hunters with archery and muzzleloader license can help as well.

“Sportsmen Against Hunger is a charitable program that raises money for processing of donated goose and deer meat, and coordinates distribution of donated meat to food pantries in North Dakota,” The North Dakota Game & Fish Department reports. “It is administered by CAPND, a nonprofit agency that serves low-income families across the state.”

Community Action Region VI Food Pantry Coordinator Sarah Oberlander says meat from hunters can be dropped off at specified lockers, which will then inspect the meat and process it. Then, pantry officials will pick them up and prepare them for distribution.

“Hunters can drop off their game, including deer, duck, geese or others, and Community Action will cover the processing fee,” Oberlander said. “People have already been asking for deer meat, which we don’t have yet.”

Oberlander says the meat does not go to waste, because it is only given to families who either ask for it or accept it.

In Region VI, drop off locations include Reister Meat of Streeter, Millers’ Fresh Foods of Cooperstown, Valley Meats of Valley City, The Butcher Block of Oakes, LaMoure Lockers of LaMoure, and Warehouse Grocery of Harvey. All food donations will service the nine country region for Community Action.
