The funeral service for David M. Berntson, 74, Valley City, ND will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at Grace Free Lutheran Church, Valley City. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday, November 21 from 5-7 PM with a prayer service beginning at 7:00. There will also be an hour of visitation prior to the service on Wednesday. He died at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City on November 16, 2017.

David Martin Berntson was born June 20, 1943 in Valley City, ND to Alfred and Helen (Sorenson) Berntson. His father was a teacher, which meant David was able to attend multiple schools in the area. He graduated from Pillsbury High School in 1961. In 1964, David joined the ND National Guard. He worked for Sebby’s as a carpet layer for a few years before going out on his own.

In 1965, David was married to Eileen Pavlicek at Grace Free Lutheran Church in Valley City. David began his farming and ranching career in 1974. When he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in January of 2004, he began thinking about retirement. In 2005 he “retired” from farming, but continued to help his son, Scott.

David was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, rural Valley City. He served on the Zion Church Board, as well as many years on the Green Township Board. He was also a member of the Eagles Club.

He is survived by his wife, Eileen; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Rebecca and their children, Josie, Andrew, and Adon; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and James McAllister and their children, Paige, Tyler, and Jason; siblings, Ellrene (Duane) Sortland, Vivian (Dave) Nelson, Lois (Bud) Badger, Anita (Tom) Erickson, Douglas (Ruth) Berntson, Barbara (Raymond) Mewes, Olive (Howard) Rasmusson, Delbert (Joan) Berntson, Gail Christl, Durwin (Mary) Berntson, Dallas Berntson, and Darryl (Jeanne) Berntson; sister-in-law, Geraldine Pavlicek; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Denton and Paulette Berntson; brothers-in-law, Elmer Christl and Don Pavlicek; and nephews, Tod Erickson and Dan Pavlicek.
