JAMESTOWN, N.D. (JimmieAthletics.com) – The University of Jamestown men’s basketball team ran their record to 9-2 heading into Friday night’s conference opener with Dakota State after two wins in Phoenix.

100, Arizona Christian 86

Ben Weisbeck (SR/Bismarck, N.D.) scored 21 points and all five starters reached double figures as the Jimmie men’s basketball team defeated Arizona Christian 100-86 Friday evening.

Jon Purintun (JR/Linton, N.D.) and Sam Johnson (SR/Mora, Minn.) each scored 19, Kevin Oberweiser (JR/Drummond, Mont.) added 15, and Leighton Sampson (SR/Worthington, Minn.) finished with 12.

The Jimmies shot 55.9 percent from the field and were just under 50 percent (11 for 23) from three-point range.

Johnson was a perfect 5-for-5 from long range, and Purintun, Oberweiser, and Isaiah Dobson (SO/Stillwater, Minn.) each sank two treys.

UJ led 46-32 after a Purintun three-pointer with 2:45 in the first, but the Firestorm cut the lead to seven following a 9-2 run to close out the half.

Jamestown expanded its lead to 16 after a Sampson jumper made it 71-55 with 12:27 to play. ACU scored 24 of the next 36 points and made it a four-point game, 83-79, following Sam Finley’s basket with 5:02 remaining.

A three-ball from Johnson with 3:31 left made it 88-81 Jimmies, and Arizona Christian would get no closer than seven points the rest of the game.

Jamestown 79, #RV Benedictine-Mesa 69

Kevin Oberweiser (JR/Drummond, Mont.) scored a career-high 26 points and the Jimmie men’s basketball team won for the second time in as many nights, defeating Benedictine University-Mesa 79-69 Saturday afternoon.

Oberweiser made six of nine attempts from three-point range and was a perfect six-for-six at the foul line. He also grabbed four rebounds and recorded three steals.

The Jimmies (9-2) led 41-38 at the half, shooting 15 of 26 from the floor (7 of 14 from beyond the arc). The Redhawks were just under 50 percent in the first half, making 15 of 32 attempts.

Devin White tied the game for BMU with a three-pointer to make it 43-43 with 15:35 to play. A 12-5 UJ run pushed the lead back to seven with 8:19 remaining, and Jamestown would lead by no less than four the rest of the way.

Ben Weisbeck (SR/Bismarck, N.D.) finished with 19 points and five rebounds. Leighton Sampson (SR/Worthington, Minn.) chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds.
