FARGO, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- Both teams held tough in the first half with a pair of talented Deacon teams but couldn’t hold off big 2nd half runs as Valley City basketball dropped their season openers Tuesday night in Fargo. The girls fell 69-49 and the boys 77-59. Both teams play in 2 point games Friday at Grand Forks Red River.

Shanley 69 VCHS 49

Shanley opened with 4 straight points before a 3 from Lexi Ondracek cut The Hi-Liner deficit to a point. Valley City would get within a point twice more in the first half. With about 5 minutes left in the half The Deacons went on a run to led 34-22 at intermission. That momentum carried into the second half and they put the game out of reach.

Courtney Lloyd led Valley City with 16 points, Jadyn Dieterle scored 7 with Josie Berntson and Taryn Dieterle adding 6 each. Reile Payne put up 26 for Shanley.

BBB: Shanley 77 VCHS 59

The boys game started out like the girls with Valley City falling behind 4-0. Matt Lyter would produce an early 3 to get the game to 4-3. The closest The Hi-Liners would get in the first 18 minutes was within a point of Shanley. They trailed 37-27 at halftime.

Lyter ended the game with a team high 17. Riley Miller had 12, Hunter Burchill 9 and Sam Beierle 8. Jake Kava of Shanley paced all scorers with 19 points.
