MAYVILLE, N.D. (VCSUVikings.com) –  A projected Top 25 battle turned into a one-sided tilt Friday night in Mayville as the VCSU women’s basketball team rolled to a 28-point victory.

The No. 19-ranked Vikings built a 22-point halftime lead and coasted down the stretch for an 84-56 road win over No. 23 Mayville State University.

Four different Vikings scored in double figures and 10 Vikings scored in the game as part of a balanced performance.

Valley City State improves to 15-3 overall and 7-2 in the NSAA. Mayville State drops to 14-6 overall and 5-4 in the NSAA. The Vikings maintain their hold on second place in the NSAA standings. Bellevue (13-10, 6-3 NSAA) is now alone in third place while Mayville State drops into a three-way tie for fourth place.

The Vikings led just 19-14 after the first quarter Friday in Mayville, but pulled away by outscoring the Comets 27-10 in the second quarter. VCSU’s 46-24 halftime lead ballooned to as many as 31 points in the second half en route to the victory.

Valley City State shot 53 percent in the first half and 49 percent for the game (29-59). The Vikings hit on 36 percent of their 3’s (5-14) and 64 percent of their free throws (21-33).

Lexi Lennon led the offense with an all-around strong performance, pouring in 20 points, pulling down seven rebounds and dishing five assists. Mackenzie Huber had 17 points inside, while Alli Vandal tallied 13 points and eight rebounds. Guard Hannah Schlecht had 10 points and set a career-high with 13 rebounds as she posted her second career double-double. Kennedy Henningsgard totaled a team-high seven assists while adding nine points.

Valley City State out-rebounded the Comets 59-28, including a 19-10 edge in offensive rebounds. Mayville State shot just 27 percent overall (17-63), 12 percent on 3’s (4-33) and 69 percent at the line (18-26).

Karleigh Weber led the Comets with 13 points, and Cyan Hale added 11.
