N.D. (JimmieAthletics.com) – A 22-5 second-half run by the Jimmie men’s basketball team turned a 20-point Dickinson State lead with 11 minutes remaning into a three-point nailbiter just six minutes later. In the end, the conference leading Blue Hawks staved off the Jamestown comeback bid and came away with a 79-72 win Friday evening at Harold Newman Arena.

Jon Purintun (JR/Linton, N.D.) scored 24 of his game-high 28 points in the second half, including 18 of the Jimmies’ 27 points in an eight-minute stretch. Purintun’s basket with 5:15 to play put Jamestown within three points at 66-63.

The Blue Hawks scored nine of the next 12 points to go up by nine (75-66) after Jerry Shelvin drained a bucket with 2:01 remaining, and that proved to be the the final dagger for the home team.

UJ led 24-16 with 4:57 left in the first half, but Dickinson State reeled off 16 of the next 18 points to lead 32-26 two and a half minutes later. The Blue Hawks led 37-30 at the half.

Marcus White had 15 points and 18 rebounds for the Blue Hawks (12-6 overall, 7-1 North Star Athletic Association), who had five players in double figures. Carter Gallo and Konner Goettsch both finished with 14 while Terrell Buler finished with 11 and Shelvin 10.

Joining Purintun in double figures for Jamestown (14-6, 4-4 NSAA) were Leighton Sampson (SR/Worthington, Minn.), who posted a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds), Kevin Oberweiser (JR/Drummond, Mont.), and Jack Talley (FR/Sioux Falls, S.D.), both of whom finished with 10. Sampson also recorded 5 blocked shots.

The Blue Hawks were outshot .386-.373 but held a slim 49-47 rebounding edge and turned the ball over just nine times.

Jamestown, which saw its four-game conference winning streak snapped, looks to get back on track Saturday as Dakota State (S.D.) comes to Harold Newman Arena. The Blue Hawks, winners of their last six NSAA contests, travel to Mayville State (N.D.)
