CASSELTON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- Valley City softball sent a message Saturday with 2 big wins. They defeated West Fargo 5-3 to get their first ever victory against the defending champion Packers.

In game 2 Hailey Schaefer no hit the defending Class B champs and top ranked Kindred Vikings as they cruised to a 10-0 win.

Head coach Jason Lindgren says he was impressed with his team’s ability to remain focused on Kindred after the win over The Packers

 

Schaefer has pitched in all but one game this season and registered a season high 12 strike outs, Lindgren felt she did a good job executing the game plan against Kindred’s batting order

 

VCHS is now 5-0 on the season.

 

Game 1: Valley City 5  vs. West Fargo 3

Valley City capitalized on some early miscues by West Fargo sending all 9 batters to plate in the 1st inning. They scored 2 runs on an error and a run on a bases loaded walk to Becca Thompson giving The Hi-Liners a 3-0 lead.

A solo home run to straight away center by Mikayla Johnson gave The Packers their first run of the game in the 4th. West Fargo led off the 5th inning with a single and ground rule double and scored the tying run on a single by Lauren Diemert.

With 1 out in bottom of the 6th Thompson and Lexi Ondracek reached on base hits. Jessie Undem came in to pinch hit and advanced both runners into scoring position. Erin Anderson brought in the go ahead and an insurance run to pull The Hi-Liners ahead 5-3.

The Packers went 3up 3down in the 7th to end the game, the final out was on a ball tracked down in foul territory by right fielder Hailey Schaefer.

Thompson worked all 7 innings to get the win, she scattered 7 hits with a walk, hit batter and 7 strike outs. West Fargo starter Courtney Boll was lifted after just 1/3 of an inning.

Game 2: Valley City 10 vs. Kindred 0

Schaefer set the tone early striking out the side in the 1st inning and setting down the first 5 batters she faced. Kindred’s only 3 base runners reached via walks. Along with 12 strike outs Schaefer also had a stellar day at the plate with 3 extra base hits and 2 RBIs.

The Hi-Liners put up a season high 10 runs on 15 hits, also a season high. Kacee White had 2 hits and drove in 2. Courtney Lloyd also plated 2 runs and hit a triple in the 5th.

Theresa Klinnert started for Kindred, she pitched 3.1 innings taking the loss. Abigail McDonald pitched the final 3.2 frames. Both pitchers were tagged with 4 earned runs.
