ABERDEEN, S.D. (VCSUVikings.com) – The Vikings and Saints played 13 innings in game one as they split their North Star baseball doubleheader Friday in Aberdeen, S.D.

Presentation College outlasted VCSU for a 2-1 victory in the 13-inning thriller. Valley City State bounced back with a 5-2 victory in game two of the doubleheader.

VCSU is now 13-21 overall and 7-9 in conference play. Presentation College moves to 19-15 overall and 10-6 in conference play.

Up next: Valley City State University will host two days of games on Sunday and Monday at Charlie Brown Field. Sunday’s games will be between Waldorf University and Presentation College at 2 p.m. The Vikings take the field Monday at 12 p.m. against Waldorf University.

 

Presentation College 2, VCSU 1 (13 innings)

Ivan Hostetler scored on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 13th inning as Presentation College won the opener, 2-1.

VCSU outhit the Saints 16-12, but was only able to push across a run in the top of the fifth inning. Emmanuel Leyva’s sacrifice fly scored Brennen Neva for a 1-0 lead. The Saints tied the game in the bottom of the sixth and the teams combined to go scoreless for the next six innings.

VCSU used five different pitchers in the game, including starter Nicholas Vargas who pitched five shutout innings in a no-decision. Chase Carpenter, Brady Engebretson, Jacob Miller and Shaun Kourajian pitched out of the bullpen as well. Miller took the loss.

Alejandro Gutierrez went 5-for-6 at the plate to lead VCSU’s offense. Brady Smith went 4-for-6 and Grant Wehseler had a 3-for-5 game.

 

VCSU 5, Presentation College 2

Valley City State scored four runs in the top of the second inning as the Vikings salvaged a split with a 5-2 victory in game two Friday.

Andrew Hirsch went the distance for VCSU, scattering 10 hits and allowing just two runs in his complete-game performance. He walked only one and struck out seven, throwing 110 pitches for the victory.

Emmanuel Leyva’s bases-loaded double cleared the bases in the top of the second and capped a 4-run inning for VCSU. The Vikings added an insurance run in the sixth inning after Kody Lanetripled and Neva drove him in with a single.

Grant Wehseler went 3-for-3 at the plate for VCSU. Kody Lane scored twice and went 1-for-2. Neva finished the game 2-for-3 with a run and RBI. Leyva doubled and drove in three runs.
