ABERDEEN, S.D. (VCSUVikings.com)– The Valley City State University softball team completed a 4-0 weekend with a doubleheader sweep of Waldorf University on Saturday.

The Vikings scored in the first four innings of game one as they won 7-5, and then rallied with five runs in the seventh inning of game two to win 9-6.

Valley City State improves to 33-10 overall and 16-5 in the North Star Athletic Association. Waldorf drops to 6-28 overall and 6-14 in the NSAA. VCSU also swept a doubleheader from Presentation College on Friday.

Up next: Valley City State is scheduled to host Mayville State University on Saturday, April 28.

VCSU 7, Waldorf University 5

The Vikings scored in each of the first four innings of game one, pickup up the 7-5 victory.

VCSU set the tone early with four hits and three runs in the top of the first inning. Waldorf rallied back to tie the game 4-4 with four runs of their own in the second inning. VCSU put up two more in the third inning and one in the fourth and then held on down the stretch.

The Vikings finished with 13 hits and seven runs. VCSU committed three errors. Waldorf had five runs on eight hits. The Warriors committed one error.

Four Vikings had two hits each in the game. Voni Culp went 2-for-4 with a run and team-high two RBIs. Joelle Aiello, Emily Smith and Kelli Moore had two hits apiece. Autumn Perry went 1-for-4 and scored a team-high two runs.

Nichole Reed started in the circle for VCSU and lasted 4 1/3 innings for the win. Reed scattered eight hits and gave up five runs, three of which were earned. She walked two and struck out five. Haley Butterfield pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and did not allow a hit as she picked up the save.

VCSU 9, Waldorf University 6

Valley City State trailed 5-4 entering the seventh inning but scored five runs in their last at bat to pick up a 9-6 come-from-behind victory.

Kelli Moore and Brittney Manthie each had two-run singles to highlight the deciding five-run rally.

The Vikings finished with nine runs on 13 hits. Waldorf scored its six runs on nine hits. VCSU committed six errors in the game while Waldorf had four errors.

Five different Vikings had two or more hits in the game. Moore went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Kelsey Hamade also had a three-hit day, scoring a run and driving in one. Voni Culp was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Manthie and Jayme Menard each had two hits and drove in two runs.

Kathleen Gallais started in the circle for VCSU and went 1 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and three runs. Haley Butterfield pitched the final 5 2/3 innings for the victory, scattering seven hits and three runs.
