VALLEY CITY, N.D. (VCSUVikings.com) – Waldorf University picked up a pair of victories Monday in a North Star baseball doubleheader against Valley City State University.

Game one went extra innings as Waldorf earned a 5-3 victory in 10 innings. The Warriors scored five runs in the first inning of game two and then held off VCSU for an 8-4 win.

Valley City State drops to 13-23 overall and 7-11 in the NSAA. Waldorf improves to 19-23 overall and 12-7 in the NSAA.

Up next: Valley City State hosts Minnesota-Morris in a non-conference game Wednesday. Waldorf is scheduled to host Clarke University on Tuesday.

 

Waldorf 5, VCSU 3

Valley City State tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, but left the winning run at third base after lining into a double play to end the threat.

Waldorf responded with two runs in the top of the 10th inning to secure the extra-inning victory.

Mackenzie Pearson pitched a complete game for Waldorf, scattering eight hits and three runs over 10 innings. He walked two and struck out seven. Garrett Gillen went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs to lead Waldorf’s offense. Joey Ponder added two hits and an RBI.

Aiden Brook and Jorun Hame each had a pair of hits for VCSU. Hamre and Brady Smith each drove in a run.

Jordon Roos started on the mound for VCSU and went six innings. The senior allowed six hits and two earned runs, walking two and striking out eight. Jacob Miller pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Brady Engebretson pitched a scoreless ninth before running into trouble in the 10th inning and taking the loss.

 

Waldorf 8, VCSU 4

Waldorf set the tone early with five runs in the top of the first inning off Viking starter Max Koprek. The Vikings battled back to within 5-3 after three innings but could get no closer as Waldorf tacked on insurance runs in the later innings.

The Warriors totaled 13 hits in the seven-inning game, including a 3-for-5 performance by Riley MacDonald. Nestor Jimenez, Cal Fazzio, Garrett Gillen and Garrett Munoz each had two hits.

Valley City State managed eights hits in the loss, led by two each from Grant Wehseler and Brennen Neva.

Jesse Johnson had a strong pitching appearance in relief for VCSU, going 3 2/3 innings and giving up four hits and one unearned run. Chase Carpenter gave the Vikings two innings out of the bullpen, including striking out the side in the fifth inning.

Noah Welch picked up the win for on the mound for Waldorf, allowing six hits and three runs over five innings. He walked two and struck out four.
