FARGO, N.D. (VCSUVikings.com) – Sayge McKrill qualified for nationals and set a new school record in the women’s discus Friday as the VCSU track and field throwers competed at the NDSU Tune-Up Meet in Fargo.

McKrill recorded a top mark of 43.66 meters (134-2) in the women’s discus, meeting the NAIA “B” standard to qualify for nationals and breaking the school record of 42.73 meters set by teammate Mackenzie Huber just nine days ago.

It was the third time this season that the women’s discus record has fallen. McKrill had broken the record two weeks ago on April 20, only to see it broken by Huber on April 25.

McKrill is the seventh Viking to qualify for nationals during the outdoor season, joining Huber (discus), Megan Johnson (long jump, triple jump), Grace Miller (marathon), Kyle Odegard(javelin), Garret Roemmich (javelin) and Dennis Gonzalez (marathon).

Odegard picked up another first-place finish in the men’s javelin on Friday, winning the competition with a top mark of 57.40 meters (188-4). Odegard has now won the men’s javelin at all four meets he has competed at this season.

Friday’s meet at NDSU was the final competition for VCSU prior to the NSAA Conference Championships, which will be held May 10-11 at Dakota State University.

“Despite facing some windy conditions, our throwers had strong performances across the board, including another national qualifying performance in the women’s discus,” head coach Chris Johnson said of Friday’s meet. “We know what we need to work on over the next couple days as a team, and I look forward to our kids bringing their best efforts on Thursday and Friday at Dakota State.”
