VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The state wants Barnes County to have a plan in place at the end of this year concerning the future of the jail. Earlier this year, the state said gave the county three options repair, renovate or build a new jail.

State Director of Facility Operations Don Redmann inspected the 110 plus year old Barnes County jail in Valley City on May 22.

Barnes County Sheriff Randy McClaflin said this time inspectors complimented the staff on adjustments made following a previous inspection earlier this year. He said the final report on the jail will be released in June and more details about the inspection will be made public at that time.

Earlier this year, Redmann encouraged the community to get together to see what the best options are for the county. He said the layout of the jail presents security and liability issues if something bad happens to a staff member or an inmate.
