Valley City and Wahpeton Split at Charlie Brown Field

 

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- Valley City Post 60 and Wahpeton Post 20 each earned a shutout win Friday night at Charlie Brown Field. In game 1, Valley City held on to win 3-0 while in the second game Wahpeton used a 7 run 6th to run away with a 10-0 victory.

Both games counted in the southeast region standings, Post 60 is now 3-3 in the region while Wahpeton is 2-2. Valley City plays again Saturday in The Enderlin Wood Bat Tournament facing Oakes at 12pm and Langdon at 4pm.

Game 1: Valley City 3 vs. Wahpeton 0

Riley Gerhardt put Valley City up 1-0 with a sac fly in the 1st innings and that would be their only offense for the next 3 innings. Wahpeton starter Chris Thiel set down 11 in a row before getting touched up for 2 runs in 5th.

Post 60’s defense held off several threats by Wahpeton including a 2 on nobody out situation in 5th. Post 20 would strand 8 runners.

Jacob Johnson pitched 6 2/3 to get the win, he struck out 7 and walked 3.  Eaton Hesch got the final out to get a save. Thiel collected 6 strikeouts in the loss.

Hesch drove in 2 for Valley City.

Game 2: Wahpeton 10 vs. Valley City 0 (6 innings)

Leading 3-0 Wahpeton ended the game early after exploding for 7 runs in the bottom of the 6th. They held Valley City to just 5 baserunners and 4 hits. Hesch went 2 for 3 and Gerhardt and Avery Bennefeld went 1 for 2.

Mitchel Taylor started for Post 60, he went 5 innings allowing 3 earned runs with 4Ks.
