ELLENDALE, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – An Ellendale, ND woman is helping families and others who have an individual with Down syndrome. Especially those in rural areas of the state.

Brittney Bain started her work after her very own son, 4 year-old Zeke, was born with Down syndrome.

Bain says the volunteer program led her to promoting funding projects and encouraging communities to grow and strengthen to support those with special needs.

Bain is also one of 20 people picked by Governor Doug Burgum to serve on the North Dakota State Council on Developmental Disabilities (SCDD).

Ultimately, her journey has led her to create the non-profit “All Around With Downs.” Through this, Bain answers direct messages from other parents needing support and advocates projects for those in need.

One such project is South Park in Ellendale. She says when it comes to parks and other things for kids with special needs to play, rural areas of North Dakota are lacking.

Bain says she applied for grants from SCDD to get two inclusion swings built in the Ellendale park. The swings will support up to 100 pounds and will mainly be used for kids 0 to 5 years of age.

She says these will be some of the first inclusion swings that aren’t in a big city like Bismarck or Fargo.

A special event is planned for Saturday, August 25th at South Park in Ellendale at 3 PM to celebrate the newest addition and the work that has gone into the project. Everything will be free and open to the public.
