OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- Oakes sophomore Garret Meehl threw for three touchdowns, ran in for another and had a 95 yard interception return for a score as the Oakes High football team rolled past Hankinson 35-6 in both teams season opener at Cummings Field Friday night.

Meehl had a 16 yard strike to Ashton Biesterfeld, a one yard touchdown run, and a seven yard connection to Logan Sell after the Tornadoes first drive ended with going three-and-out.

Hankinson was able to work their way back into the fold, as Noah Falk hooked up with Skylar Keller for a 29 yard strike with no time left in the opening half to make it 21-6.

However, the Pirates (0-1) turned the ball over on downs twice and fumbled once on their first three drives in the second half. Coy Awender ran it in from 15 yards out on a botched field goal attempt in the third, and later in the fourth, Meehl made the play that sealed up the game.

The Tornadoes (1-0) head to Wyndmere to meet the defending Class 9-Man State Champion Warbirds of Wyndmere-Lidgerwood on Friday, August 24. The Warbirds lost their season opener on the road in LaMoure to LaMoure-Litchville/Marion 35-0.
