Coach’s comments

Wow.  The players came through today in the play-in match.  This was a regional line-up match which means 3 singles and 2 doubles where players can only play one or the other.  We put out a line-up to combat any possible combination that West Fargo could throw at us and the players stepped up.  Great job Hi-Liners!

Jack and Collin started a little slow but turned it on, dropping only two total games in the 2nd and 3rd set after losing the 1st.  They stepped into balls at the baseline and played aggressive on the short balls.  At the net, they angled balls and were looking for the put away.  It was fun to watch!

Hale and Austin played their best doubles match of the year in this play-in match as well dropping only two games in two sets.  Hale played extremely consistent at the baseline leading to Austin putting away balls at the net.  Also, Hale approached to get two to the net, which is sound doubles strategy.  This avenged a loss that Hale and Bennett had against West Fargo in the regular season.  Great job you two!

Derek was the better player in his match-up and he proved it.  He played consistent and reset the point when needed and attacked when the situation presented itself.  Good win, Derek!

Bennett drew the short straw in today’s match-up.  We thought if they were to put their #5 or 6 at #2 singles that Bennett could get us a win.  If they put their #2, 3, or 4 there, we knew that Bennett would have a tough match, but this would lead to us having a favorable match-up in doubles.  Well – they put their #3 player there and Bennett did what he could, but came up short.  Bennett played his part for the team as Derek was able to get the win at #3 singles and Austin and Hale was able to get the win at #2 doubles.  Way to do your part, Bennett!

Blake added consistent, high, deep topspin and resetting the point to his repertoire.  He implemented these in today’s match and stayed patiently aggressive.  After a close first set, he settled in and won the clutch points in the second set.  Good match, Blake!

Seth and Kai both played an exhibition match.  These two have shown great improvement on the year.  We have only one senior graduating and we have two up and comers chomping at the bit.  It is better to have the problem of too many talented players than too few!
