Carrington, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)——Milnor-North Sargent (MNS) held Carrington to a season low 6 points and only 196 total yards of defense to upset the Cardinals in the opening round of the class A 11-man playoffs. The Bulldogs, despite a minus 21 yards rushing on 34 attempts in the game found plenty of success in the passing game to generate enough offense to spoil Carrington’s bid for a long playoff run. Junior quarterback Logan Wyum completed 17 of 35 passes for 304 yards and 2 touchdowns. Josh Martinson was the favorite target for Wyum, hauling in a game high 10 receptions for 202 yards and a TD. Martinson put the Bulldogs on the board first with 4:31 to play in the 2nd quarter on a 46 yard connection from Wyum. The 2-point try failed and MNS led 6-0 at halftime. Carrington would tie the game up at 6-6 with 5:01 to play in the 3rd quarter when junior quarterback Seth Nelson plunged into the end zone on a 1 yard keeper. The Cardinals also failed on their 2-point try. MNS would take the lead for good with 1:01 to play in the 3rd quarter when Wyum connected with Matt Asche on a 10 yard TD pass giving the Bulldogs a 12-6 advantage. The final points of the game on a safety with 10:43 to go in the game. MNS threw an interception on a fourth down and 19 from the Carrington 25  yard line. The interception for Carrington was ultimately a bad thing as it was caught and downed at their hald yard line. The first play after the pick was a safety as Drew Page was tackled in the end zone. Carrington was given several chances in the final quarter to possibly score and tie the game with a 2-point conversion but MNS forced 3 Cardinal 4th quarter turnovers, including a game sealing interception with 1:30 to play at the Bulldog 30 yard line. Carrington held the Bulldogs running game in check all game long as Wyum was the leading rusher with 6 yards on 8 carries. Carrington finished the game with 109 rushing yards on 32 carries. Lucas Geiszler led the Cardinals with 45 yards on 10 carries, 26 of those yards were on 1 carry and Nelson finished 38 yards on 14 carries and the only Cardinal TD of the day. Nelson threw for 87 yards on 7 of 27 passing and 3 interceptions. Carrington was penalized 9 times for 73 yards and MNS finished with 7 penalties for 55 yards. MNS improved to 7-2 overall and will play defending state champion Hillsboro-CV next Saturday in Hillsboro. Carrington finishes it’s season 7-2 overall.
