OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – With first year head coach Brennan Hack, the Oakes Tornado girls basketball team kicked off their season with a robust 56-44 victory over the Enderlin Eagles.

Coach Hack picks up his first victory at Oakes and thought his team’s performance was a nice start to the season.

“It was good. We didn’t turn the ball over a lot,” said Hack.

The team had only four practices where every player was present due to the high school’s volleyball team making its run to the state championship game. Coach Hack thought the lack of practices with the team in its entirety could present a potential problem, but that wasn’t the case Tuesday night.

The Tornadoes were lead by junior forward Nicole Schmitz who finished with a team-high 19 points. Right behind her was senior guard Lynsey Schmitz as she racked up 14 points. Both Schmitz’ combined to score the Tornadoes’ first 18 points of the game.

Sadie Hansen provided a nice spark off the bench finishing with 11 points.

Leading the way for the Eagles was senior forward/guard Hope Lindgren and sophomore guard Kaylie Schlect with 12 points each.

Oakes will look to start the season 2-0 this Friday night when the team travels to Tower City to take on the Maple Valley Raiders at 6:00.
