VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A Barnes County Jail Committee meeting was held on December 4.

In October of 2018, architects, engineers and construction managers gave presentations to the committee. At that time, a majority of the members voted to pursue every available resource to build a new jail.

The cost to build a new jail is estimated between $9 million to $13 million depending on the architect and construction firm selected.

On December 4, jail committee chairman Bill Carlblom said it appears that most of the members favor building the structure northwest of the courthouse and razing the one hundred plus year old jail. He said the committee is still working on putting a plan together.

Barnes County State’s Attorney Carl Martineck said nothing has been finalized concerning the proposal to build a new jail.
