VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The state of North Dakota lowered the grade of the Barnes County jail from a Class I to a Class III facility following a December inspection.

Since December 20 of 2018, Barnes County Sheriff Randy McClaflin said under the new rule the jail is only able to keep inmates for a maximum of four days, then they are transferred to other facilities in the state.

On the morning of January 2, the Barnes County jail inmate roster showed one inmate in in the correctional facility. After four days all inmates have to be transferred to other jails.

In 2018, the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation told Barnes County officials to have a plan in place to renovate or build a new jail.
