VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – All four of the top seeds were winners Tuesday night in the opening round of the 102nd Annual Barnes County Boys Basketball Tournament held at the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse at Valley City State University.

Chance Bye scored 20 points and Joseph Hurlburt had a double-double leading the top seeded Eagles who snapped a two game losing streak.

Hurlburt had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles. Gustave Hurlburt had 13 rebounds and Bye added five assists.

Owen Zerface had 16 points and six rebounds to lead the Spartans.

#4 Griggs County Central 65#5 Maple Valley 56

Tanner Haugen scored 15 of his game high 23 points in the second half as the Cougars avenged a loss back in December to Maple Valley.

Haugen had seven rebounds and three steals. Isaac Smith scored 10 points and had a game high 15 rebounds for the double-double. Hunter Gronneberg had 16 points and Jonah Ringstad chipped in eight points and five assists for the Cougars.

Carson Hovelson led four Raider players in double figures with 17 points. Jacob Johnson had 13 points while Adam Punton and Grady Karges had 12 each.

#2 LaMoure/Litchville-Marion 51, Sargent Central 25

The Loboes used a 19-0 run between the second and third quarters to pull away from Sargent Central.

Shay Ness led the way with 18 points, five steals and three assists for the Loboes. Jamison Kramer added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Alex Klever chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds.

Logan Wyum led the Cadets with eight points and eight rebounds. Dillon Schreiner added seven points and five assists.

#3 Milnor/North Sargent 58, Barnes County North 52

Matthew Asche’s three point play with 3:29 to go in the fourth gave the Bulldogs a 47-45 lead, a lead they would not give up and extended their winning streak to 4 games.

Asche’s bucket came 2:45 after Barnes County North took their first and only lead of the night on Mason Haugen’s three point play with 6:14 to go giving the Bison a 45-44 lead.

Asche finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Joshua Martinson had a game high 14 points with six rebounds and five steals.

Tristin Roaldson was the only Bison in double figures with 10 points. He would also add six rebounds. Colby Bruner and Jacob Harstad had nine points each.
