CARRINGTON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The Cardinals hosted the Panthers of Rugby in a girls and boys double header on Saturday afternoon in Class B non-region basketball action, here are the results:

GIRLS – RV Carrington 44 No. 6 Rugby 43

The Cardinals led for most of the contest, leading 24-15 at halftime. But Senior Guard Marie Blessum scored seven of her 13 points in the third quarter and Senior Guard Anni Stier added six of her 13 in the third quarter to help the Panthers close the gap to three, 34-31. Carrington led 44-40 with just nine seconds left in the fourth quarter, Stier would hit a 3-pointer just as the clock expired to make it 44-43. Several Cardinals players had a great fourth quarter to help seal the victory, Junior Bella Hone hit two field goals, Senior McKenzie Johnson had a field goal and a free throw and Junior Addison Hoornaert hit three crucial free throws down the stretch to help the Cardinals send the Panthers to just their second loss of the season. Johnson led the way with 13 for Carrington, Kayden Mehring added nine, Hone ended with eight and Hoornaert with six. The Cardinals improve to 12-2 overall, Rugby drops to 12-2 overall.

BOYS – Carrington 59 No. 2 Rugby 51

The Cardinals turned the ball over 16 times in the first half and were down 32-21 at halftime. But the Cardinals would come out strong in the second half outscoring the Panthers 38-19 to get the victory. The Cardinals were sparked by Senior Payton Smith with 11 fourth quarter points, including 5 of 6 at the free throw line. Junior Seth Nelson scored nine of his 11 points in the second half, Kyle Leapaldt hit a three ball and McCoy VandeHoven had three field goals to aid the scoring spree. Drew Page added eight of his 11 points in the second half as well. VandeHoven had a total of 12 total points as four Cardinals players scored in double figures, Smith led the way with 20 points. The Panthers were led by Devan Michels with 16, Jaden Hamilton with 12 and Trace Goven with 11. Both teams shot well from the free throw line, the Panthers were 15 of 16, the Cardinals were 8 of 11. The Cardinals improve to 7-5 overall, the Panthers suffer just their first loss of the season and are now 10-1.

Next up for the Carrington girls will be a District 5 match-up at Lamoure to take on the eighth rated Loboes of Lamoure/Litchville/Marion on Tuesday, January 22nd. AM 1600, FM 100.1 KDAK the Cardinal and newsdakota.com will have the pregame report about 6:45pm, tip-off at 7pm. The Cardinals boys team will be in Leal to take on Barnes County North for a District 5 contest next week Tuesday as well.
