Larimore, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—–The Carrington wrestling team finished in second place at the 2019 Region 2 individual wrestling championships scoring 188 points, well behind the champions of Central Cass who won the tourney with 226 points. Carrington had 7 wrestlers reach the finals and crowned 3 champions. Treston Lura, the number 2 seed, won the 113 pound crown over top seeded Robert Norman (senior) of Larimore 5-0.  Lura, a sophomore, improved his record to 34-14. Freshman Brecken Lura, the top seed at 126 pounds defeated Matt Anderson of Hillsoro-Central Valley (HCV) in the title match by fall at 4:32 of the third period. Brecken recorded his 100th career win a few weeks ago and improved to 36-13. Senior Lucas Geiszler was the top seed at 138 pounds and dominated the weight class with 3 pins on the day including a fall over Central Cass’ Junior Totay  at 1:23 of the first period. Geiszler also recorded pins in 27 seconds and just 8 seconds earlier in the day. Geiszler spent a total of 1:58 on the mat in the 3 matches and improved his season record to 43-7.  Tate Hoggarth, had the top seed at 152 pounds and left no doubts with a win by fall over Central Cass’ Chase Jacobson at 3:44 of the second period. Hogarth improved to 40-13 overall.
The Cards had 3 second place finishes including 106 pounder Matthew Duchscherer. Duchscherer, was seeded third, lost a 9-6 decision to Central Cass’ Jake Deutsch, the number 1 seed. Sophomore Beau Retzlaff, the three seed at 182 pounds, scored a fall over second seeded Joe Ellison of Central Cass in just :27 seconds of the first period to reach the championship match against top seeded Mark Hastings of HCV. Hastings, the top rated 182 pounder in class B defeated Retzlaff by fall at 1:50 of the first period. Junior Colton Buskness finished in second place at 195 pounds, falling to top seeded Bailey Lawson of Harvey-Wells County by pin at 3:51 of the second period. Buskness will head to the state tourney with a 36-12 record.
Eighth grader Kael Kovar had a good day as well, finishing third at 120 pounds. Kovar’s only loss was to top seeded Isaac Felchle of HWC in the semifinals. Kovar, seeded fourth, pinned number 3 seed Matthew Keena of Pembina County North (PCN) at 3:41 of the third period. Other placers for Carrington were Austin Neumiller, 6th place at 160 pounds. Kaulder Kvamme (170) and Hunter Beumer (285) both finished in fifth place. Carrington qualified 8 wrestlers for next weeks state tournament.
The Region 2 coach of the year award went to Central Cass’ Travis Lemar. The outstanding senior wrestler went to both Cade Merrigan (220) of Central Cass and Mark Hastings (182) of HCV. Here are the rest of the championship matches not listed from above.

Carrington will finish the 2019 wrestling season next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (February 14, 15, 16) in Fargo at the state wrestling championships at the Fargodome.
