District 5 Championship and Region Qualifier Games Set After Day 2

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Day two of the District 5 Girls Basketball Tournament saw two tremendous games go down to the wire in a high-energy Saturday of hoops.

Here are the results from day two:

Ellendale 42, Barnes County North 40

With the win, the Ellendale Cardinals ended the season for the Barnes County North Bison after their 42-40 victory on Saturday.

Ellendale trailed by as many as 10 points in the 3rd quarter, but went on a 27-15 run to end the game. The key to the comeback was on defense for the Cardinals. As a unit, they forced a whopping 30 BCN turnovers and held the Bison to just 31% shooting in the 2nd half.

The Ellendale offense was facilitated by Katelyn Dathe who recorded a double-double with 11 points on 5-8 of shooting and 10 rebounds.

On the other side, Clara Wieland did everything she could for her Bison. She finished with 23 points on 8-12 shooting and recorded 7 steals as well.

Carrington 48, Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier 38

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, but Carrington was able to put together a 22 point 3rd quarter to pull away in the first semifinal game.

Carrington’s defense was flawless the first 15 minutes of the game as they held EKM scoreless until the 4:32 mark in the 2nd quarter. Behind the robust defensive performance, Carrington built a 14-0 lead to start the ball game. EKM didn’t go away quietly as they mounted an 11-6 run to to end the first half and trail by only 5.

The Cardinals came out in the 2nd half and shot 52% from the field. The offense was kick started by McKenzie Johnson who nailed three 3-pointers in the 2nd half and led the team with 19 points.

EKM ended the night shooting 47% from the field after its abysmal start in the first 15 minutes. Maren Berntson, who had to get her ankle taped up, was the Rebels’ leading scorer with 16 points on 7-13 shooting.

LaMoure-Litchville-Marion 62, Oakes 59

LLM got some revenge over the Oakes Tornadoes on Saturday after falling to them in late January.

With the best atmosphere of the night, LLM came to play. The two teams were separated by just 3 point after the first quarter, but the Loboes exploded in the 2nd quarter and outscored Oakes 19-5 while shooting 57% from the field to take an 11 point lead into the break.

Oakes, facing one of its biggest deficits of the year, clawed back in the 3rd quarter to cut the lead to 5 headed into the 4th. Oakes ended up erasing its deficit in the 4th quarter to tie the game with around 3 minutes to play, but LLM pulled away thanks to robust free throw shooting down the stretch.

Ellie Holen was the star for the Loboes as she finished with 25 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and played all 32 minutes in the win.

Sadie Hansen recorded 22 points to lead the Tornadoes. Hansen now has 54 points through two games in the district tournament.
