The Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season 20 Presents:  Professor Jackie Owen (VCSU) “Gifted and Talented Education: Why We Need It”. 7 PM Thursday, February 21st at the Barnes County Museum.

Jackie Owen, M.Ed, M.S, Learning Services Coordinator at Valley City State University, Gifted and Talented Education is needed for some children.  Professor Owen will present different definitions of “gifted and talented.” She will discuss the characteristics and needs of gifted and talented students, and why gifted education should be a part of school systems. The presentation will be geared towards parents, educators, administrators, and pre-service teachers.

Jackie Owen came to VCSU ten years ago after having taught 29 years, in two states, grades K-7. Jackie is a tenured assistant professor in the VCSU Department of Education and Graduate Studies at VCSU, currently serving as the Learning Services Coordinator. She has master’s degrees from Utah State University and North Dakota State University. Jackie taught in a graduate program for gifted and talented at the University of California. She has presented at numerous state and regional gifted conferences, several conferences of the National Association for Gifted and Talented, and at three conferences of the World Conference on Gifted and Talented children. She has presented professional development workshops in Fargo, West Fargo, at Oak Grove Lutheran School, and at schools in South Dakota, Utah, and California. She is currently helping to launch the new North Dakota Association for Gifted Children, and is the area contact for the Valley City-Jamestown and surrounding areas.

Alfred Dickey Library Centennial Celebration Week @ Alfred Dickey Library

The James River Valley Library System is prepared to host their Centennial Celebration of the Alfred Dickey Library February 19th through the 22nd.

After renovating everything from the roof to new lighting, conference room, Children’s space, carpeting, and historic front desk, Library Director Joe Rector says it sets the historic library up for the next 100 years.

The full week of events will be free and open to the entire public. The full schedule is below:

Family Movie Night @ Alfred Dickey Library

The Alfred Dickey Library will be having a FREE family movie on Thursday, February 21st at 6pm.

Free popcorn and punch will be served – first come, first served.

City County Health District Cholesterol Screening Feb. 27
Feb 23 all-day

City-County Health District and CHI Mercy Health (hospital) will hold a fasting community cholesterol screening Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 7-9 a.m. (7:30-8:30 a.m. if there are not enough people participating). It will be held at the CCHD facility located at 415 2nd Ave. NE, Ste. 101 (west of Leevers North). This test will include your total cholesterol, HDL/LDL cholesterol, plus your blood glucose and triglycerides. The cost for the cholesterol (total lipid profile) screening is $35. Also offered during this wellness screening will be a free blood pressure check for all participants.


  • must not drink alcoholic beverages for 3 days prior to testing.
  • must not eat or drink anything for 12 hours prior to testing (see exception below).
  • may take any medications needed with small amount of water.

If it has been difficult to draw blood from you in the past, it is recommended that you drink plenty of water the day previous to fasting.

If you are interested in participating in this screening, you must pre-register by calling City-County Health District at 845-8518.  The number of participants is limited, and names will be taken on a first-call basis.

Considerations for Starting a Brewery and Distillery with Dr. Christiansen @ University of Jamestown US Building Room 136

Have you ever considered starting your own brewery and distillery? If so, you’re in luck! Dr. Katrina Christiansen, a local agricultural engineer and innovator, will be sharing insights on how to get started in this information session!

The agenda will be as follows and will include plenty of time for Q&A – being compliant with the industry’s regulatory and food safety regulations, identifying capital, procuring equipment, managing operations, and establishing marketing and sales plans.

Dr. Christiansen’s bio:

Dr. Katrina Christiansen has extensive experience malting and developing novel grain processes. She is one of the designers of the Intelligent Malting Unit. She applies her bioprocess engineering background to assist the blooming craft malting industry make safe, consistent products with properities brewers and distiller’s already skilled with new ingredients can harness. She started working in the malting industry as the Pilot Project Lead for Cargill Malt for 4 years. While there she contributed two malting process patents. Prior to Cargill, she completed a PhD comparing biofuel crops and production systems at Iowa State University in 2011. She also worked as a Plant Engineer at a 60 million gallon biofuel ethanol plant in Nebraska and completed her undergrad and Master’s in Biosystems Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

North Dakota Home School Association Convention @ Jamestown Civic Center

The 2019 North Dakota Home School Association will be held in Jamestown February 28-March 2.

Participants will engage in workshops and other activities.

Workshop topics include Hands On-learning, Microsoft Word, and tips for successful homeschool.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Brian Ray, a founder of the National Home Educators Research Institute.
