VC Boys Golf 6th
By Steve Phillips
May 15
On a near perfect day, the
Valley City Boys Golf team shot a season low 317 to
finish in 6th place at the EDC meet at Devils Lake
Country Club.
This
course was ideal for our young team as this par 70
course played to a length of 6200 yards. Freshmen
Travis Ingstad had a great showing, tying for 10th
individually with a 76. He was followed by fellow
freshmen Brian Zerface who had a solid round of 79.
Next action for the Hi-Liners is 9 am on Monday May 19th
@ Grand Forks Kings Walk.

May 13
The Hi-Liner boys golf
team went to
Grand Forks
yesterday and finished in 7th place. The boys
were excited to finish a meet outside of the cellar for
the first time this year, even though their team score
was up a bit from the previous two meets. Our team score
of 352 tied us with Devils Lake, but after looking at
both teams 5th scores (tied @ 93) and 6th
scores, Valley City came out on top. Matt Sorenson shot
an 86, Shane Ost 87, Brian Zerface 88, Travis Ingstad
91, Nick Jenson 93 and Ben Sorenson 98. The Hi-Liners
are at Devils Lake Country Club
tomorrow.

Starr
New Hi-Liner Girls BB Coach
By
Steve Phillips
May
12
Waylan
Starr has been named the new girls basketball head coach
for Valley City High School. He was an assistant last
season under Coach Dallas Dockter.
Starr graduated from
Bisbee-Egeland
High School in 1989 and in his senior year was a member
of the 1989 Boys Basketball State Championship Team.
Starr then attended the University of North Dakota and
graduated in 1994 with a Bachelors degree in Social
Science and History.
After
graduating, he taught and coached 3 years at Powers Lake
North Dakota, as Head Girls coach in 1996 and Head Boys
Coach for the 1996-1997 Season. Starr then moved to
Kindred in 1997 where he taught and was an assistant
with both the girls and boys programs for 8 years.
Starr was then given the opportunity to be Head Girls
Coach from 2005-2007. While head Girls coach he had
two teams advance to the state tournament in the
2005-2006, 2006-2007 seasons. While at the state
tournament his teams placed 3rd and 6th respectfully,
and was voted District 2 Coach of Year.
In
2007 Starr moved to Valley City where this past season
he was the assistant coach for the Valley City Hi-Liner
Girls Basketball team. Waylan Starr is married to
Ranetta and they have two children, Stephanie (17) and
Amanda (12).
Tennis Anyone

On
Saturday, Valley City's got on the bus in the sleet and
headed off to Fargo for the West Fargo Invite. On
arrival, it was still sprinkling. After about an
hour of hanging around, the tourney finally was called
off. Coach Thiner from Fargo South and myself got
together and figured out a plan to play our make-up
match that day at Courts Plus in Fargo. Knowing full
well that my girls will be playing a several matches
indoors at regionals this weekend, we pounced on this
opportunity.

#2 Kjelland/Sorensen lost to Moe/McGuigan 6-1, 6-2
#3 Bridget Berger/Hilary Larson defeated Diederich/Sonnet
Ludwig 6-4, 7-5
Head Coach Matt Nielson said - Playing indoors was
extremely valuable for us. It is a different atmosphere
with the sounds, the lighting, and how the crowd views
the matches. Hopefully, this experience will take
the 'awe' factor out of next weekend at the indoor
facility in Grand Forks.
Eryn Lutjens played a tough match against Anna Wanzek.
Anna is a great player who spends a lot of time at
Courts Plus in the winter, so for Eryn to be that close
was amazing!
Our #4 through #6 singles all had a shot at winning. All
three played great making smart shots and decisions, but
two of them came out on the wrong side of the super
tiebreakers. I couldn't be happier with how these girls
played!
Hilary Larson stepped up to the plate for Valley today.
A varsity team member was gone for the match, so Hilary
played her second varsity match of her life. Right now,
she is 2-0 lifetime with wins over Red River and Fargo
South! Great job Hilary and Bridget for the win at #3
doubles!
