Eddy County Sheriff Darrell Hager is accused of using department credit accounts to buy items for himself, including a computer and a back massager.

Hager is charged with misapplication of entrusted property, a felony that carries a maximum punishment of five years in prison. Hager says he disputes the charge and plans to fight it.

Hager was elected sheriff in 2006 and resigned last September for what he says were personal reasons unrelated to the accusations. The North Dakota attorney general’s office is prosecuting the case. Officials there declined comment.
