say it was a tornado and others say it was a strong straight line wind that caused so much damage in Oakes. KDDR’s Wade Fossum says about 5 percent of the city had it’s electrical power restored, but still no power for the rest on Monday morning. Police Chief Mark Roberts says no injuries were reported so far from the storm. “It looks like a bomb hit it,” that was the comment made by several people living in Oakes after they saw the damage caused by a Sunday storm that struck about 4:50pm.
The storm knocked down the KDDR radio transmitter tower, damaged several homes and up rooted hundreds of trees. The Oakes Community hospital emergency room would not say if anyone was injured from the storm. So far, there was no report of anyone being injured. Dickey County Emergency manager Charlie Russell says property in the town of Monango also received heavy damage from the storm. There were also reports of 2 to 3 inches of rain in Dickey county from the storm.
Dawn and Faith Osborn and family headed to the basement once they heard the storm sirens sound. They were shocked to see their driveway covered with tree branches after the storm passed.
KDDR Radio’s Wade Fossum’s home also received some damage on Sunday.
West of Oakes, 3 grain bins were crushed from the wind of the storm.
Ottertail Power Company crews are working hard to try and restore power to the city after the storm knocked down power poles and lines.
Once again the KDDR radio transmitter tower was knocked down and it may take a while before the tower is set up again.
