CITY  (NewsDakota.com)–The Valley City State University Viking football coaching staff has seen some changes and additions for 2011.

The first change was at the offensive co-ordinator position.   Marty Costello, who shared the duties with Rob Hunt a year ago, has assumed the duties full-time this year.

Head coach Dennis McCulloch says Costello is a good fit for the team.  “He’s got a great scheme, and I’ve been really impressed.  People are going to see that,” said McCulloch.

Two new coaches have joined the staff.  Marty Higgins and John O’Day have joined the staff to work with skilled players on the offensive side.

Higgins comes from Northern Michigan, where he returned to coaching last year after a retirement from the profession.  He has coached at Western Michigan and Eastern Illinois.

“Coach Higgins has a lot of experience, some Division I stuff and Division II stuff.  He brings a lot of balance to all of us,” says McCulloch.

O’Day comes to VCSU from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, and has a background that includes Division II Chadron State, NE.

“Coach O’Day gives us a lot of flexibility working with runningbacks,” said McCulloch.

The Vikings open play September 1st at home against Morningside, IA.
