N.D. — The Sanborn Outlet is up and running some 3 miles northeast of the city to reduce the rising lake level.

Barnes County Water Resource District board member Duane Lettenmaier says the contractor H&S of Moorhead did a great job installing the 26-hundred foot, 36 inch, underground pipe in Hobart Township.

He says the outlet is running at half speed now to see how everything is working.

The outlet, located in Hobart Township, is about 3 and a-half miles southwest of the Sheyenne River.

Earlier this year, B-N-S-F agreed to pay $300,000 to install the underground pipe. If the cost exceeds that figure the county would have kick in the difference.

The state water commission approved of an emergency permit earlier this year to slowly drain water off the lake.

The lake has grown in size causing problems with the BNSF rail bed east of Sanborn delaying train traffic and blocking a railroad crossing out of Sanborn frustrating motorists.
