City, N.D. – About 80 people attended the “Citizens for the Future” rally in Veteran’s Park Valley City on Thursday.

Group spokesman Keith Hovland encouraged Valley City voters to keep the city administrator position which is the target of an initiated measure to eliminate it.

Hovland said eliminating the position would send Valley City back by 10 years and disrupt the efficient way city government is run now.

Another supporter Kara Camstra said, the city did a fantastic job of organizing and fighting the flood this spring with the help and hard work of the city administrator.

Former Valley City Mayor Mary Lee Nielson says position is needed for the city to run its day to day operations smoothly.

Valley City Mayor Bob Werkhoven says the vote should be about the position and not about the man in it or the current controversy surrounding the police chief’s oral reprimand.

The group handed out yard signs at the rally encouraging the public to vote “No” during the special city election on October 4.

Opponents of the position say it is an unnecessary expense for the city and want voters it eliminated in the October 4 election.
