Mark McKenzie(NewsDakota.com)…The good news, the Jimmie football team scored first in their conference opener versus Dickinson State Saturday at Greeno Field. The bad news, the Hawks scored 30 unaswered points, and rolled to a 30-6 victory.

Things started well, as Senior QB Brad Lint hooked up with Junior TB Matt Mitthaugen on a screen pass that the Junior took to the house from 15 yards out to stake the Jimmies to early second quater lead 6-0. The extra point was failed, and that was the start on one mistake after another.

Shortly there after, a blocked punt set the Hawks up on the Jamestown 21 yard line, and three plays later, Dickinson was in the end zone. Neither team did much offensively in the first half, and the Hawks held a 10-6 lead at the break.

The second half started with Jamestown getting the ball first, but the Jimmies were pinned deep, as return man, Sophomore Steve Nelms slipped at the 12. Lint was sacked on third down and the ball popped out. It was scooped out of the air by Dickinson defensive lineman Steve Hearuaf, and he rumbled in from a yard out to extend the lead to 16-6 with :90 seconds gone in the second half. The Hawks missed the point after attempt.

The Jimmie Defense continued to keep Jamestown in the contest but finally Dickinson het for it’s one and only big offense play of the game, and it was a back breaker. Junior reciever Tanner Leak hauled in a 61 yard touchdown pass with 3:37 to go in the third, to put the game out of reach.

Lint threw his third pick of the game early in the fourth, as his throw over the middle was intercepted by Jay Grosz. The Junior ran the ball to the Jimmie one. The Hawks offense wasted no time to ice the game away, as RB Brennan Haughian plowed in with 10:00 to reamaining to round out the scoring.

The Jimmies quarterbacks threw four picks, and were sacked seven times. Jamestown had a punt blocked, missed a 37 yard field goal, and failed on an extra point.  All the ingredients for a one sided defeat. “Embarrassing” said head Bud Etzold, “We were out played, and out coached. This is humbling, and it all starts with me. They lined up and kicked our butts.”

Jamestown came into the game averaging 393 yards of offense, but the Hawks defense limited the Jimmies to 181 total yards, 37 rushing, and 144 passing. Dickinsons offense didn’t fair much better, gaining only 212 yards, 105 on the ground and 107 through the air. Jamestown falls to 1-2, 0-1 in the DAC, Dickinson improves to 1-3, 1-1 in the conference.

Next up for the Jimmies is a trip to Mayville to battle the Comets next Saturday, with the kickoff set for 1:00 pm on Classic Hits KQDJ, AM 1400, 97.1 FM, and newsdakota.com with Mark McKenzie and Bill Nold.
