N.D.- Two people from Minnesota in their twenties were injured after trying to pass a semi that was turning onto North Dakota Highway 11 from Highway 1 just south of Oakes on Thursday night.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol says 24 year old Chad Smith of Maple Grove was driving south on Highway 1 around 7:45 p.m, when he came upon a semi driven by 76 year old John Hayen of Cogswell. Smith tried to pass Hayen on the left, but did not realize Hayen was turning left onto Highway 11.

Smith’s car struck the front end of the semi, entered the west ditch of Highway 1, rolled and came to rest in the middle of the highway.

Smith and his companion, 21 year old Jody Hanson of Comfrey Minnesota were taken to Oakes Hospital and treated for minor injuries. Hayen was uninjured. All were wearing seatbelts.  Smith was cited for overtaking at an intersection.
