(NewsDakota.com)–The top seeds all won matches and advanced during the opening day of the District 5 volleyball tournament in Gackle.

Pingree-Buchanan-Kensal 3, Barnes County North 0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-23)

The Rebels got on an early roll in the first two sets, then fought off a challenge in the third set for the sweep.

PBK cruised to a 13-4 lead in the first set, and never allowed the lead to fall lower than four.  They took a four-point edge at 11-7 in the second, and stretched the advantage till the end.

In the third, BCN had three different three-point leads, but a six-rally run by the Rebels turned a 16-13 disadvantage into a 19-16 lead.  After the Bison tied the match at 23-23, PBK took the final two points.

Ellendale 3, Litchville-Marion-Montpelier 0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-17)

The tournament’s second seed had little trouble advancing.

The Cardinals won six in a row after LMM used a timeout in the first, taking a 15-3 lead.  They then powered out to leads of 18-7 in the second and 12-5 in the third.

The Rebels mounted a bit of a charge late in the third against a mix of starters and reserves from Ellendale, with the Cardinals controlling the match till the end.

Edgeley-Kulm 3, Central Prairie 0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-11)

The Rebels showed a great deal of balance in their sweep of the Firebirds.

With a mixture of middle and outside attacking, along with a solid block, Edgeley-Kulm gradually took leads in the first two sets.  The key sequence took place in the first set, when the Rebels won six straight rallies after two time outs by Central Prairie.

The Firebirds managed to stay in the first two sets early, but the third saw the Rebels take a 12-1 lead en route to the finish.

Friday brings a loser-out match between LMM and Central Prairie at 4:30 p.m.  LaMoure, the tournament’s top seed, plays its first match against PBK at 6:00, with Ellendale and Edgeley-Kulm to finish the second day at 7:30 p.m.  All matches are broadcast on Sunny 98.3 FM.
