fire in southwest Jamestown severely damaged a mobile home Monday night at 1204 Western Park Village.

“In my opinion, the trailer is a total loss,” Jamestown fire chief Jim Reuther said Tuesday. “But I do believe they will be able to salvage some of their belongings.”

Reuther said the fire was reported to start on the deck of the home when the department was called at 9:16 p.m. The fire extended into the front of the mobile home and also burned a vehicle. He said the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

Reuther said seven units and 35 firefighters responded to the fire. They were on scene for about an hour and a half. Reuther said one firefighter suffered an injury, although it did not appear to be a serious injury.

Beth Dewald, executive director for the American Red Cross Buffalo Valley Chapter, said the Red Cross responded to the fire and is providing motel rooms for the family of five that was displaced by Monday’s fire.

She said this is the third fire in a week that has displaced area residents and the Red Cross has responded too.

In case of a fire, Dewald stressed that families should have a personal family disaster plan, practice fire escapes from each room in their home, and have a designated meeting point outside the home so everyone can be accounted for. Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors should also be checked to make sure they are functioning correctly.
