– The North Dakota Farmers Union elected a new president Saturday for the first time in 15 years.

Elwood “Woody” Barth was chosen at the group’s annual convention to take over for Robert Carlson, who stepped down after 15 years leading the organization.

Barth has served as vice president of North Dakota Farmers Union since 2008 and was first elected to the state board of directors in 2003. Barth, his wife and daughter farm south of Mandan where they raise cattle and grow corn.

Also on Saturday, the North Dakota Farmers Union honored 47 youth with the Torchbearer Award. It is the highest honor that senior youth may achieve in Farmers Union. Youth must complete five consecutive years of senior youth work to be eligible.

Area recipients include Nathan Willer of Jamestown, Courtney Klever of LaMoure, Emily Albrecht, Cody Beach and Lauren McMillan, all of Wimbledon, Austin Ross of Valley City, and Cassidy Weber of New Rockford.
