CITY (NewsDakota.com)–The Hi-Liner wrestling team traded punches with the top team in the state, West Fargo, Tuesday night.

West Fargo simply threw too many punches early.

The Packers, with 13 ranked wrestlers and four returning state champions won two falls, two forfeits, and two major decisions in the first six weight classes building a 32-0 lead, and topped the fifth-ranked Hi-Liners 41-29 at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.

Once the dual got to 145, the Packers only scored in two more bouts, but it was enough to keep the Hi-Liners, now 0-2 in dual competition, at bay.

After forfeiting three times to Grand Forks Central in the season opener a week ago, the Hi-Liners forfeited at 120 and 126, after Jakob Ashline lost a fall to Jesse Schearer at 106, and Cole McGough lost a fall to Jordan Shearer at 113, putting the Hi-Liners in a 24-0 hole.

Jackson Lemnus was then beaten by Weston Dobler 15-2, and returning state champion Angelo Shephred shut out Hi-Liner Mark Miller 14-0 at 138, and West Fargo was comfortably head 32-0.

Valley City picked up three wins in a row, with Shane Undem outpointing Kyle Kragnes 6-2 at 145, Reed Beckman working a technical fall over Tanner Kuznia at 152, and Zach Doty winning the match of the night, a 10-9 nail-biter over Shelby Schulz at 160, cutting the lead to 32-11.

West Fargo sealed the deal with Miles Scholl’s 8-2 win over Stephen Radermacher at 170. Packer Preston Lehmann, ranked nationally and the top-ranked wrestler at 182, won a fall over Wyatt Bjornson, giving the Packers a 41-11 lead.

Valley City made a change in their lineup, inserting Noak Kaber at 195 to take a forfeit, and moving the weight classes top-ranked wrestler, Brandon Larson to 220. Larson worked a fall over Steven Sola, and Hi-Liner Steven Horner finished the dual with a highlight, using an effective fireman’s carry for a fall over Patjim Lika.

The Hi-Liners wrestle in the Jamestown Tournament this weekend, and dual at Carrington December 8th.
