CITY (NewsDakota.com)–The Viking basketball teams found their winning ways again Wednesday night, sweeping the University of Minnesota-Morris.

The Viking women answered every surge by the Cougars, winning a 71-63 decision, and the men finished the sweep by stretching to a 30-point advantage in the second half, winning a 78-54 decison.

The Viking women improved to 6-8 overall, rebounding from a loss to the University of Sioux Falls Saturday. The men moved to 7-4 after a loss to USF Saturday snapped a four-game winning streak.

Valley City State took three 10-point leads in the women’s matchup, but each time, the Cougars rallied, cutting the lead to as few as one, but never capturing the edge or tying the game, thanks in part to clutch Viking shooting.

Allison Scherr (Jr., Mohall, ND) hit four clutch threes for a 16-point night, co-leading the teams with Katie Ralston (Jr., Dahlen, ND), who hit seven field goals driving to the basket and cleaning up misses. Alyssa Hummel (Jr., West Fargo, ND) scored 12 points and added nine rebounds.

The Viking men struggled to put distance on the Cougars early, leading 38-30 at the break, but found offensive rhythm and defensive intensity in the second half.

Sekani Milligan (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, FL) hit six second-half field goals, including three from beyond the arc, to lead the Vikings with 20 points. Aaron Duske (So., Buffalo, MN) knocked in 15, and eight Vikings scored between five and 20 on the night. The Vikings scored in all three phases, with post-play, perimeter shooting, and a transition game that had been missing in recent contests.

The Vikings entertain Trinity Bible College Friday night in a doubleheader, starting at 5:30 p.m.
