N.D.- It was a night that those in attendance at the Oakes High School’s north gym on Friday night won’t soon forget. Two incredibly tight games went to the wire; including one that went to overtime that changed the residency of the sacred traveling trophy known as the Cowbell.

Girls: Oakes 58 Ellendale 54

The Oakes girls earned their first victory of the season, and the first win for first year head coach Caitlyn Wojahn thanks to a gutsy performance by the Tornadoes in the second half. With Oakes leading by 10 after the end of two quarters, the Cardinals came out swinging in the third, starting the half on a 11-4 run. However, the Tornadoes were able to slide away towards the final minutes due to Ellendale foul trouble, and 39 points from Nicole Warren.

Boys: Oakes 52 Ellendale 51 (Overtime)

The Tornado boys were able to bring home the Cowbell for the first time since the 2007-08 season with a thrilling performance of their own against the Cardinals.

No team in the contest ever had a lead bigger than 10 points, and after Oakes was hit for numerous fouls in the first half, breaking past 10 team fouls by the early second quarter, the Tornadoes settled down in the second half and overtime to prevail. Simon Maddock once again lead Oakes in scoring, the second consecutive game having the most points for Oakes, but Adam Roney stepped up big in the second half and overtime, scoring eight of his 11 points in the final three periods.

Win the wins, the Oakes girls are now 1-2, and the boys are 1-4. The next games for both teams are not scheduled until the Dakota Holiday Tournament in Ellendale, which starts on December 29.
