funeral service for JoAnn Bakken, 72, Hannaford, ND, formerly of Dazey, ND, will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 4, 2012 at Faith Lutheran Church, Hannaford.  Rev. Jessica Merchant will officiate and burial will be in Memory Gardens, near Valley City, ND, later in the spring.  She died at Mercy Hospital, Valley City on January 30, 2012.         

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Friday, February 3 at the Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City.  Visitation will continue at the church in Hannaford at noon on Saturday.         

JoAnn Tolstad was born September 11, 1939 in Valley City, ND to Albert and Johanna (Berge) Tolstad.  She was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Dazey, ND.  She attended school in Dazey, graduating in 1957.  Following graduation, she attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN for two years.        

She ventured to California and worked for NASA at Vandenberg Air Force Base and later worked for the US Navy.  Her career took her to Columbia, Missouri, where she met and later married, Buddy Roberts.  They moved to Brooklyn Park, MN and eventually to Texas.  After Buddy was diagnosed with cancer, the family moved back to the Tolstad farm near Dazey.         

JoAnn met and married John Bakken.  They made their home in Hannaford, ND.  The couple spent their summers at Lake of the Woods.  John passed away in 1996.  She continued to live in Hannaford until her death.         

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.         

JoAnn is survived by her sons, Steve Roberts and Bryon (Michelle) Roberts both of Mesa, AZ, a granddaughter, Micheala Roberts; a brother, Ron Tolstad of Valley City, ND; and many nieces and nephews.          

She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 husbands, and 2 brothers.
