Irene Bryngelson, 102, of Grand Forks, formerly of Valley City, ND, passed away Thursday, February 9, 2012, at Woodside Village in Grand Forks, ND.

She was born October 21, 1909, to Frank and Georginia (Turcotte) Cartwright and was raised in Tolna, ND. Having taken all of the courses offered at Tolna, she went to live her senior year with her Uncle Herb and Aunt Mary Cartwright in Staples, MN. While there she played the violin in the school orchestra and was on the basketball team. She graduated from Staples High School and later attended Valley City Normal which is now Valley City State University. She taught for several years in the Lakota, ND area. She married Roy Bryngelson on May 29, 1933, and spent her married life in Valley City, ND. Roy was the manager of the Barnes County Co-op Creamery, and they built the Dario Drive- In with the Taylors and McKays which they operated for twenty-two years. She and Roy raised three children, Kathleen, Gary, and Colleen. She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, and a Life member of the ELCA. Edith was also involved with the Ladies Aide, Alter Committee, and taught Sunday school and Bible School for many years. She served on the Girl Scout Council for ten years in addition to being a scout leader. She was a very kind and generous person and provided a welcoming home. During Roy and her years at the Dari-O, they developed strong friendships with the teenagers of the community.

She is survived by her children: Kathleen Gillund (Wendell) of Naples FL, Gary Bryngelson (Shirley) of Wilton, MN, and Colleen Zick (Charles) of Grand Forks, ND. She is also survived by the following grandchildren: Linda Nolan(Cecil), LeAnn Davidson, Wendy Gillund, Kim Bryngelson (Tammy Hamborg), Todd Bryngelson (Jodene), Kristine Light(Larry),Tori Bryngelson, Greg Zick(Sandra), Michael Zick(Daniel), and Jill Hauser(Jamie). Twenty great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews also survive. Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, her parents, four brothers, and four sisters.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 PM Tuesday , February 14, 2012, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Valley City, ND with Rev. Randy Schlecht officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services.
