M. Huus, 79 of Kathryn, ND passed away on March 11, 2012 at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND.  He was born on October 16, 1932 to Selmer G. and Mable L. (Brenna) Huus of Hatton, ND.  Selmer was baptized and confirmed at St John’s Church in Hatton, ND.

He attended school at Garfield #1 in Hatton, ND and was drafted into the Army in 1953 during the Korean Conflict.  He was stationed in the Philippines for 10 months and later stationed in Okinawa, Japan. 

He returned from the Army in 1954, then met and married Ruth P. Stavedahl on May 3, 1957 and settled in Valley City, ND.  He worked for the ND State Highway department for 42 years as a civil engineer.   In 1976, they made their home in the Kathryn area.  Sam was a member of the Waldheim Lutheran Church.

Known to his friends and family as Sam or Junior.   Sam was a kind and compassionate animal lover.  In retirement, he enjoyed working cattle with his son, Jeff, and neighbors, Jim and Merrill.   He enjoyed having dogs all of his life.    Sam’s sense of humor was one of his most beloved traits.  A favorite quote of his was “My goal in life is to be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.”

Sam was a fun-loving person; he enjoyed playing cards and board games with his children and grandchildren.  Family was the most important part of Sam’s life.  He took pleasure in visits and walks with his daughters Dawn and Sherry.   Sam enjoyed watching sporting events with his family.       

Sam was a devoted husband and father and was especially proud of his marriage to his wife, Ruth; a partnership which grew and strengthened nearly 55 years.

He was a member of the American Legion, AMVETS, Lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, and Eagles.

 

Selmer is survived by wife, Ruth P. Huus, children Guy (Marie) Huus, Frazee MN; Sherry Lorenz, Marion, ND; Dawn Hass, Valley City, ND; Jeff (Kris) Huus, Enderlin, ND; Todd (Sharee) Huus, Elk River, MN; Greg (Lisa) Huus, Fort Ransom, ND.  He also was blessed with 19 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.  Surviving brothers and sisters include  Muriel Bjerke, Valley City, ND; Loraine Mehus, Valley City, ND; Duane (Bev) Huus, Emrick, ND; Darlene Hanson, St. Cloud, MN; Robert Bristlin, Mandan, ND;  Kenneth (Clair) Bristlin, Philippines; Steve Huus, Mandan, ND; Mike (Terri) Huus, Austin TX; Deb Huus (Ron) Petersen, Valley City, ND; Linda Bass, Fargo, ND; Jaci Huus (Vince) Herrera, Round Rock, TX; Joseph Huus, New Salem, ND; Doran (Kathy) Huus, Mandan, ND; Tim (Jaydeen) Huus, Gillette, WY.

He is preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Joyce Huus; sister, Elaine (Delbert) Kelley; granddaughter, Angel Hass; and great grandson, Marcus Stockert.

 

Funeral services will be held at Waldheim Lutheran Church, Kathryn, ND on Friday at 11am.

 

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City.  A prayer service will be held there beginning at 7pm.
