Berg, age 92 of Valley City and formerly of Tower city, ND died peacefully surrounded by family on March 12, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Valley City. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Sunday, March 18, 2012 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tower City. Visitation will be from 4 PM until 7 PM Saturday at the Lerud-Schuldt Funeral Home with a prayer service beginning at 7 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services Sunday at the church. Interment will be in Buffalo Cemetery later in the spring.

Harold Berg was born January 2, 1920 at Buffalo, ND the son of Arthur and Meta (Richman) Berg. He graduated from Buffalo High School and on Jan. 29, 1942 entered service with the US ARMY. He served overseas in the Phillipines and Japan and was discharged on Jan. 23, 1946. Following his discharge he returned to North Dakota and began farming in the Tower City area. On July 8, 1949 he was united in marriage with Berniece Titus. The couple raised their family there. Following Berniece’s death in 1973 Harold continued to farm. On Dec. 12, 1975 he married Rose Bender. They farmed until 1984 and moved to Valley City in 1999. At the time of his death Harold was a resident at the Sheyenne Care Center.

Harold’s favorite hobbies were hunting, fishing, and choral singing and he noted his favorite places to be were in grouse habitat, duck marshes, and fishing holes. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Eagles Aerie 2192. He had served as the president of St. Paul Lutheran church council, Sunday school superintendent, and was a member of the church choir. He also was a member of the Valley Troubadors.

Harold was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, and will be greatly missed by all.

Survivors include his wife, Rose; 3 daughters, Diana (Terry) Hanson, West Fargo, ND, Sharon (Brian) Opdahl, Grand Forks, ND, and Marcia (Fran) Fagerstrom, Eden Prairie, MN, a son Thomas (Paula) Berg, Rapid City, SD; 2 step-children, Betty Bender, CA and Kenneth Bender, Yakima, WA; 11 grandchildren, Patrick (Laurie) Hanson, Jill Hanson, Allison (Mark) Berg-Heinamann, Tamara Berg, Jennifer Opdahl, Nathan (Tina) Opdahl, Erin (Mark) Opdahl Jenner, Kaila Fagerstrom, Erik Fagerstrom, Jared Fagerstrom, and Shannyn (Brent) Fagerstrom; 2 step-grandchildren, Tyson Bender and Brian Bender; 8 great grandchildren, Ryan, Nathan, and Eric Hanson, Faith, Daniel, and David Opdahl, and Ethan and Morgan Jenner. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Vivian Irmscher, San Bernadino, CA and Arline (Thearon) Gavin, De Funiak Springs, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Berniece.
