FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The new chancellor of North Dakota’s university system wants to shake up the state’s colleges.

Ham Shirvani wants to have tougher admissions standards for the system’s 11 public colleges. North Dakota State University and the University of North Dakota would have the toughest requirements.

Remedial academic instruction would be shifted to North Dakota’s five community colleges. It wouldn’t take place any more at the state’s four-year schools.

The state’s two-year schools would be responsible for all courses taken by high school students for college credit.

Shirvani also wants to eliminate most tuition waivers for attending a North Dakota public college.

The chancellor says his proposals will stir some controversy, but he thinks they’re necessary.

Board of Higher Education President Duaine Espegard says he supports the chancellor.
