VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- Valley City boys’ basketball ended a 3 game skid and earned their first Eastern Dakota Conference win defeating Devils Lake 68-59 Friday night. It was a tale of two halves in the girls’ match up.The Hi-Liners were out scored 41-17 in the second half and lost 68-44.

The VCHS boys improve to 2-6 in while the girls drop to 2-6, both teams play Tuesday night against Davies at home.

Valley City 68 vs. Devils Lake 59

The Hi-Liners trailed briefly in the opening minutes but wouldn’t fall behind the rest of the game. In the second half Leif Nelson rattled off 8 straight point for The Firebirds and pulled the game within a point 38-37, that’d would be the closest they get the rest of the way. Valley City was up by as much as 13.

Riley Miller scored 22 points, Matthew Lyter had 11 with all coming in the second half. Avery Bennefeld added 10 off the bench. Jagger Miller was the high scorer for Devils Lake, he produced 14 points. Josh Dahlin had 10 and Nelson 8.

GBB: Devils Lake 68 vs. Valley City 44

After 6 ties and several lead changes The Firebirds and Hi-Liners were tied at 27 at the end of the 1st half. Devils Lake took control of the game in the second half, they outscore Valley City 41-17 and held them scoreless for final 5 minutes of the game.

The Hi-Liners won the rebound battle 32-26 but collected just 3 offensive board. Devils Lake turned the ball over 8 times compared to 26 for Valley City.

The Firebirds’ Mattea Vetsch knocked 4 3 pointers to finish with 22 points, Abby Johnson had 16 and Jailyn Martinson 10. Taryn Dieterle paced The Hi-Liners with 12 points, Courtney Lloyd scored 10 and Lexi Ondracek 10.
