Carrington, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—–The Thompson Tommies scored 3 runs in the fifth inning and held on for a 4-3 victory over the Carrington Cardinals. Marcus Hughes was the winning  pitcher for the Tommies, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits. Hughes recorded 6 strikeouts, hit one batter, and did not walk any batters. Hughes also started the 3 run fifth inning reaching on an error and later scoring on another Cardinal error. After a walk to Josh Sem putting runners at first and second base, Cadyn Schwabe bunted perfectly up the third base line, Cardinal starting pitcher Jayden Shipmans throw sailed down the right field line allowing both Hughes and Sem to score. Schwabe moved to third base on the throwing error and scored on Trey Larimers single. Sem (2-2, 2 walks) also scored the first run of the game in the third inning. Sem singled with 2 outs and nobody on base. After a Schwabe (2-4) single and Larimer (1-2, walk and hit by pitch) reaching first after being hit by a pitch to load the bases. Tyler Hegg singled with the bases loaded to score Sem, Jacob Dick grounded out with the bases loaded to end the third inning.

Carrington scored 2 runs in the third inning to take the lead 2-1, RBI singles from both Lucas Geiszler and Shipman scoring Hunter Mittleider and Payton Smith who both singled earlier in the inning. The Cardinals had 4 of there 6 hits in the third inning and would get the other 2 hits the following inning and built a 3-1 lead. Seth Nelson singled and later scored on a Brandon Larson single. Larson’s single would be the final batter to reach base for the Cards as Hughes retired the final 11 batters he faced. Shipman pitched all 7 innings for the Cards, allowing 2 earned runs and 8 hits, striking out 6 batters, hit 1 batter, and walked 3 batters. Carrington drops to 9-5 0verall and Thompson improved to 14-1 overall. Both teams will take be top seeds in there upcoming regional tournaments. Thompson is the number 1 seed in Region 2 and Carrington is the top seed in Region 3. The Cards will start Region 3 play in New Rockford next Monday.
