VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)- Mitchel Taylor’s touchdown in the 2nd quarter was the only scoring The Hi-Liners needed Friday night at Hanna Field. In their homecoming game, Valley City won a defensive standoff against Devils Lake 6-0.

The Firebirds brought the pressure all night and the defense answered the call. With the game on the line in the second half they did not allow Devils Lake quarterback Parker Hanson to complete a pass while holding him to 3 for 13 on the night.

Cade Powers and Derek Diegel both had sacks for big losses and Sam Beierle sealed the win with an interception with 1:30 left in the 4th quarter.

Overall head coach Scott Roehrich felt the defense was improved from last week and matched The Firebird’s physical play

Sam Payne had 15 carries for 81 yards, Taylor had 7 yards on 2 carries and a touchdown. Joey Hornstein led the game with 144 yards on 25 carries for Devils Lake.

Valley City extends their winning streak to 3 in a row and is 3-2 on the year. Coach Roehrich says right now the hard work being put in week after week is starting to show on the field

Devils Lake drops to 2-3, they host Wahpeton next week. Valley City will meet Jamestown for their week 6 matchup. With classes realigned next year, the meeting with The Jays will the last for the foreseeable future. Friday’s game is also homecoming for JHS.
