The funeral mass for John “Jack” Mandy, 91, Wahpeton, ND, formerly of Valley City, ND, will be held at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Valley City on Friday, January 4, 2019 at 11:00 AM.  Visitation will be at the church an hour prior to the service.  Burial will take place in the spring at Memory Gardens, near Valley City.  Jack passed away December 27, 2018 at St. Catherine’s Living Center in Wahpeton.

John “Jack” Mandy was born November 5, 1927 in Devils Lake ND, the son of Peter and Corinne (Ryan) Mandy.  He grew up and attended school in Devils Lake.  Jack played saxophone in the Devils Lake Boys Concert Band for seven years.  He graduated from high school in 1945.

Jack enlisted in the Army in 1946 and received his basic training in Ft. Knox Kentucky.  He was stationed in Japan with the first Occupation troops, where he joined the 11th Airborne in January 1947 and received his parachute and glider training.  He returned from the service in March 1948 and served in the Army Reserves for four years.

He joined the North Dakota Highway Department in May 1948 and was sent to the Valley City District.  He returned to Devils Lake as Assistant District Engineer for seven years and then moved to Valley City where he became District Engineer, retiring May 1990.

In 1948 he married his high school sweetheart Bernadine Brick, and together they raised four children.  Patrick, St. Cloud MN, Scott (Gina), Fargo, Terry (Patty), Wahpeton and Marci (Bill), St Joseph MN.

After his retirement they enjoyed 16 winters in Arizona.  He enjoyed hunting, trap shooting, hiking, camping and dancing.  He was instrumental in organizing the Valley City Round Dance club and served as President several times during the next 16 years.

He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus, Trap Club, Valley Rounder’s Dance Club, and the American Legion Drum and Bugle Club.

He is survived by his children; grandchildren Mark Mandy, Shannon (Mark) Olson, Rachael (Orion) Bell, Kyle Axtman and Kelly (Devon) Kroshus; great grandchildren Killian Olson, Nolan Olson, Willow Bell, Iris Bell and Emma Kroshus; and a brother, James Mandy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bernadine; sister-in-law and her husband, Elsie (Joe) Black; and a sister-in-law, Loraine Mandy.
